Right of 14-year old girl to wear the Kara to school
Protest outside the Welsh Assembly in Cardiff
Tuesday 15 January 2008
12 noon until 1.30pm

A 14 year old girl who has been excluded from school for wearing a religious bangle.Aberdare Girls School in Wales has excluded the pupil for refusing to remove her bangle as it says it has a strict policy on jewellery which only allows pupils to wear a watch and stud earrings.
The bangle is a fundamental part of the sikh religion. It is not a piece of jewellery but it is an article of faith and expression of religious belief.

I’m ashamed of this bigotry and intolerance in my nation. I thought education was about enlightenment not suppression.

This is an appalling attack that can only fan the flames of intolerance. I wish the campaign every success.

I thought Sarika was so brave to speak to all those people on Saturday 24th. I was appalled to hear how she has been isolated and refused her rights to express an unobtrusive symbol of her faith.

This ban is outrageous - good luck in fighting it. I’m a well-known children’s writer based in Cardiff (once resident writer at Aberdare Boys School) and am willing to help the campaign in any way I can.

We, the students of Mr. Jackson’s Grade 5 Class, agree that Sarika should be allowed to return to school. We believe that Sarika should be allowed to go to school as an expression of her fundamental, democratic rights.

We would like to say how proud we are of Sarika for standing up for her rights and wish her good luck in her struggle to get back to school.

Signed,

Mr. Jackson’s Grade 5 Class

Sarika Singh should be readmitted, bracelets and wrist jewelry have been worn by yonng people through the history of British education -The bangel a token of faith in no way could effect educational interaction.

Thinking is the hardest work there is, which is probably the reason why so few engage in it.

I support Sarika and call on the school to reverse their decision to exclude her.
